Perhaps inspired by the JSCA excerpt we dug up last week, one scholarly sleuth sends us this page from Smells and Aromas: Being the Diary of a Nasal Naval Officer, Lt. Elvram Tuttling-Firp, 1821-1834 (published in a facsimile edition by the University of Ham Press, 1983). Of course, we cannot be certain of the veracity of Tuttling-Firp's account, to say nothing of the sailor he quotes — but you are the sleuths, not I! All evidence is evidence, and I am here only to assist.

"qunicepaste went unate"? Is this merely atrocious handwriting, or a relative of Rev. Spooner?
I am sure that the fares on the good lieutenant's ship were quite fair. But it troubles me that the he would write, "they had paid their fair like everyone else." Does a hidden meaning lie in this supposed slip? Or is this just the curse of life before Spell Check?
